CUSCO CITY TOUR
ABOUT THE TOUR
Known as the archaeological capital of the Americas, Cusco is the oldest city in the Western Hemisphere and was the heart of the Incan empire during the 14th and 15th centuries. Today, Cusco is a blended city, with a mix of ancient pre-Inca and Inca architecture and Spanish/Colonial influences.
Cusco Cathedral
The tour begins at Cusco Cathedral, the main religious temple of the city, located on the northeast side of the Plaza de Armas. Inside, you will explore impressive colonial architecture and view important religious artworks from the Cusco School, a distinctive artistic tradition that blends European techniques with Andean symbolism.
Qoricancha and Santo Domingo Convent
Next, you visit Qoricancha, once the most important temple of the Inca Empire, dedicated to Inti, the Sun. Spanish colonists built the Santo Domingo Convent directly on top of its foundations, yet the original Inca stonework remains visible. This site offers a striking contrast between Inca engineering and colonial construction.
Sacsayhuaman
Located approximately two kilometers from the historic center, Sacsayhuaman is one of the most impressive Inca archaeological sites near Cusco. The complex is known for its massive stone walls, built with extraordinary precision. Nearby, the Cristo Blanco viewpoint provides panoramic views over the city.
Q’enqo
About four kilometers from Cusco, Q’enqo is a sacred Inca huaca and one of the largest pre-Columbian sites in the area. The site features carved stone structures and underground passageways that suggest ceremonial or ritual use, though its exact function remains uncertain.
Puca Pucara
Puca Pucara, meaning Red Fortress in Quechua, is believed to have served a military or administrative purpose. The site displays classic Inca architecture, including stone walls, terraces, and stairways, and may have functioned as a control point for access to Cusco.
Tambomachay
The final stop is Tambomachay, an Inca site famous for its sophisticated water channels, aqueducts, and fountains carved into natural rock formations. It is one of the best examples of Inca hydraulic engineering. While its precise purpose is unknown, it is often associated with water rituals or ceremonial use.
After visiting all of these sites, you return to your hotel, with the rest of the day free to explore Cusco at your own pace.
